Lyric sheetFrom «First Crossing»

First crossing in the half-light

the engine hums a note I know

you were waving from the pier at Dunoon

or I wanted you to, so

I bought a single and I never got off

back and forth until the morning came

the water doesn't ask you where you're going

it only asks your name

Tracklist

Liner notes

Where it started. Ezra wrote the first two songs on the Gourock to Dunoon ferry, crossing back and forth on a single ticket because the café stayed open and nobody checked. The rest of us joined on a wet Tuesday in a flat in Partick with the neighbours' permission and a towel under the door.

We recorded the vocals for Gourock Pier on the ferry itself, with a handheld recorder and the engine rumbling underneath. You can hear the safety announcement at the end if you turn it up.

Paper sleeves

We made one hundred copies in hand-stamped paper sleeves and sold them for five pounds at our first shows. A few people still bring them to the merch table to be signed, which never stops being strange and lovely.

It is four songs long and very rough. It is also the reason the band is called Night Ferry.
