Story

Ten years, four players, one van that has never once started first time.

  1. 2016

    First gig, Govan

Forty people in a Govan back room, a borrowed PA and six songs we had known for a month.

  2. 2019

    First Crossing EP

Four songs from the ferry, self-released and sold at the merch table in paper sleeves.

  3. 2021

    Northbound

The first album, cut in a church hall with two microphones and a borrowed piano.

  4. 2024

    Low Tide Radio

Made in Jude's flat with the windows open. You can hear the rain on two tracks.

  5. 2026

    Harbour Lights

The new album, out 07 Nov — and the longest tour we have ever booked.

The players

Ezra Vale, long dark hair and a leather jacket, against a dark backdrop

CH 1 · EZRA · VOX

Ezra Vale

Role
vocals, guitar
From
Greenock

Ezra grew up in Greenock, close enough to the Clyde to hear the ferry horns from his bedroom. He bought his 1964 Telecaster with two summers of dishwashing money and has never owned another guitar. Most Night Ferry lyrics start as notes typed on his phone during the crossing from Gourock to Dunoon, then get rewritten in the back of the van on the way to a show. He sings close to the microphone and quieter than you expect, which is why the room goes still. Off stage he runs a Sunday open mic in a Greenock pub and still turns up when the band is home.

Gear

  • 1964 Telecaster
  • Vox AC15
  • tape echo
“I write the words on the ferry and fix them in the van.”
Ama Osei in a cream shirt with gold hoop earrings, against a dark backdrop

CH 2 · AMA · BASS

Ama Osei

Role
bass, backing vocals
From
Accra → Glasgow

Ama was born in Accra and moved to Glasgow at twelve, bringing a love of highlife bass lines that still sits under every Night Ferry song. She plays a Precision Bass strung with flatwounds and owns exactly one fuzz pedal, which she uses on two songs a night. Before the band she studied sound engineering at Glasgow Caledonian and still mixes the live set from the stage through a small monitor desk at her feet. She sings the high harmonies, arranges the vocal stacks in the studio, and is the one who decides when a take is finished.

“The bass is the floor. If you notice it, I've done too much.”
Callum Reid, bearded, in a navy work jacket, against a dark backdrop

CH 3 · CALLUM · DRUMS

Callum Reid

Role
drums
From
Paisley

Callum is from Paisley and learned to play on a borrowed kit in a church hall where the only rule was not to scuff the floor. His 1970s Ludwig came from a drummer retiring to Spain; the kick drum came from a church jumble sale for twelve pounds and has a hand-painted ship on the front head. He plays with brushes more than sticks and tunes the toms to the key of each song. Callum books the van, keeps the tour spreadsheet, and knows the opening hours of every chip shop between Glasgow and London.

Jude Mensah, grey beard and a black shirt, in a dim studio

CH 4 · JUDE · KEYS

Jude Mensah

Role
keys, synths
From
Leith

Jude is from Leith and spent ten years as a session keyboard player. In 2016 he was coming home from a wedding gig on the last ferry out of Gourock when three strangers started arguing about the broken heater; a week later the four of them were in a rehearsal room in Govan. His rig is a Wurlitzer 200A, a Juno-60 and an old church harmonium that needs two people to lift and has its own seat in the van. He writes the chord nobody expects in each song and argues for it until the others give in. Low Tide Radio was mixed in his flat.
